10 Tips About Changing Careers (and Whether You Even Should)
10 Tips About Changing Careers (and Whether You Even Should) 59 A career change is a tempting way to shake up your job search, but is it the right thing to do? This is a guest post by Nisa Chitakasem. If youâd also like to guest post here on JobMob, follow these guest post guidelines. Career changes can be overwhelming, challenging, exciting, scary, fun or frustrating-and thatâs just when it comes to deciding whether to change careers in the first place. Whether or not to change careers is a major life decision to take, so itâs important to be sure that youâre making the right decision for you. Should you change careers? 1. Is there really a problem with your career?eval In order to answer the big question, ask yourself several other questions to help decide whether youâre ready to leave your current career: Is my career making me happy? Am I fulfilled in my career? Is this my career because I enjoy it or because of the praise/ money/peer pressure /etc.? Is my career stopping me from doing things I enjoy outside of work? Whatâs my personal definition of future success in this career? Am I confident of achieving my definition of future success in this career? 2. You might need new skillseval Consider whether or not youâre willing to learn new skills. Chances are if you commit to changing careers you will need to learn new skills appropriate to your career choice. 3. Can you afford it? Itâd be nice if we didnât have to consider money when thinking about work options but unfortunately some of us do! Take into account where you stand financially when considering a career change, but donât stay with your current career just for the money if the work itself is making you unhappy. No amount of money equates to happiness. 4. Maybe your job search skills just need help If youâre currently out of work, donât jump to the conclusion that you need a career change just because youâre not finding any work within your current field. Re-assess your job search instead: Review your CV to see if itâs relevant enough to the roles youâre applying for. Practice your interview technique with a friend. Connect with your network to find out about unadvertised jobs. 5. Take an honest look back Of course, being out of work may be just the motivation you need to make a career change, if it genuinely would be the right move for you. Even if you donât currently have a job you can still assess how happy you are in your current career area by asking yourself the above questions about your previous positions. Which career should you change to? 6. Follow your talent and passion Think about what career youâd like to change to by considering what youâre good at and what youâre passionate about. 7. What about you impresses others How do you define your talents and passions? Start right back from your childhood. What did people praise you for? What did you end up spending most of your spare time doing? Make a list and continue recalling your strengths and hobbies all the way through to the present day. 8. Full-time? Consider not only the content of your ideal career but also the structure of it e.g. work out if youâd like to switch from full-time to part-time, or vice-versa. 9. Know your redlines Get clear not only on what you want to do, but also on what you donât want to do. What are you willing to negotiate over and what are you not? 10. Focus on one new direction only By the way, if you think trying to pursue several career options at once is a good idea, it isnât. The âscattergunâ approach will probably result in missing all the targets. If you focus on one career, one target- youâre more likely to get what you want. Start spreading Truemors with Guy Kawasaki - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Start spreading Truemors with Guy Kawasaki - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Recently, Guy Kawasaki introduced me to his new entrepreneurship venture called Truemors. He explained how the goal with Truemors is to democratize and spread information. First, from a âcitizen journalist/editorâ perspective it enables people to âtell the worldââ"within the bounds of good taste and the law anyway. Second, from a reader perspective, it puts you âin the knowâ about the latest news, rumors, and happenings, so that âyou know betterâ without having to spend hours every day searching for information. As for how this connects with the fine art of personal branding, you will notice that many of the truemors reflect how people act and are portrayed to society. One great example is one I just read entitled And Worst Mother of the Year Goes to. Who would want that title? Either way, Guy has found the perfect blend of news worth information and social networking. As for Guy, he has managed to accomplish just about anything anyone could ever dream of and is an inspiration to the world. He is a columnist for Entrepreneur Magazine, managing director of Garage Ventures, and co-founder of Truemors. Prior to these projects, he was an Apple fellow, and author of 8 books. Thanks to Guy for being an inspiration and helping me with a few of my projects.

Private Detectives and Investigators Everything You Need To Know
Private Detectives and Investigators Everything You Need To Know âDown these mean streets a man must go who is not himself mean, who is neither tarnished nor afraid.âRaymond ChandlerHello and welcome to our very first blog on private detectives and investigators. In this introductory blog, weâll explore what private detectives and investigators are, and what qualities you need to be successful in the career.Itâs fair to say that private investigators have a fairly controversial reputation. For many people, private investigators are a thing of noir fiction, sneaking around with popped collars and fedora hats. For others, private investigating is a seedy and immoral profession that has no place in todayâs society. Whatever your view on private investigators, itâs fair to say that they have been sparking the publicâs imagination for generations, and will continue to do so. But what does a real private investigator do, and how can you become one? Letâs find out. What are private detectives and investigators? In short and simple terms, a private investigator is a person who is paid to investigate a variety of different issues or angles. 8 Job Seeker #Fails (and how to fix them)
8 Job Seeker #Fails (and how to fix them) These are common mistakes or job seeker #fails. Dont miss out of a job opportunity by a makes one of these gaffs! On social media, youve probably seen the hashtag #fail. Its used to describe something that didnt work out. Every day, I see and hear instances of job seeker #fails. Maybe youve seen it happen at work and in your job search. Im going to help debunk your beliefs associated with job search by revealing eight job seeker #fails. Ill also share the fixes. Please, do yourself a favor and dismiss all the assumptions youâve made about how jobs get filled. People hire people, not resumes. Here are the 8 job seeker #fails: 1. I will find my next job by applying to a job online. You may believe that if you apply to enough jobs, youâll eventually beat the odds and land one. Well, at least applying for jobs makes you feel like you are productive, but did you know, only 15% of jobs are filled through job boards according to CareerXroads sources of hire survey? Most jobs are either filled internally or through referrals. When you spend all your time and energy scoping out jobs and applying, youâre hurting your chances. So what else should you be doing? A combination of things. Successful job seekers use a variety of tactics during job search such as contacting industry-specific recruiting agencies or third-party recruiters, meeting one-on-one with past colleagues, attending professional association meetings, volunteering, and meeting new people every day. If this sounds daunting or almost impossible, remember, the statistic that says over 70 percent of people land jobs through networking. 2. I expect to hear a response (either yes or no) soon after I apply. After you have taken time to research a company, modify your resume and go through the application process, you assume youâll hear something. The reality is, you may not hear back from the company. Expect this to be the norm and take proactive steps. Plan to follow-up with someone in Human Resources after you have submitted your application. Ask what the timeframe is for filling the job and then ask if your application was received. Always end every conversation by asking when you should follow-up next and with whom. The really eager job seekers will make that call the same day the application is submitted. The less assertive job seekers wait about a week. Learn more about following up. Following up is not optional 3. My cover letter always will be read in full. You canât make someone read your cover letter. In reality, some people will never read a cover letter and others wonât look at your resume until after reading your cover letter. And there are varying preferences in-between. You should always include a customized cover letter explaining specifically why you are interested and qualified for the job and share something about the company to show you are a fit. If you donât take the time to do this, then why should the company take time to review your qualifications for the job? See how to write a better cover letter. 5 Ways To Customize The Dreaded Cover Letter 4. Im networkingwith people in Human Resources. One of the many roles human resources serves is to fill open job requisitions. Often, they have numerous requisitions in the pipeline and the number one priority is to fill these jobs. Requesting to network with human resources is not in your best interest nor in the best interest of the busy human resources professional. They probably donât know about all future openings or department-level plans and even if they did, HR will tell you to wait until you see something posted. Heres who you should network with: Strategically Grow Your Network Invest your time reaching out to peer-level employees inside a company and learn how these employees landed the job, what they like about the company culture and the skills and responsibilities the job requires. 5. I can only network AFTER the job has been posted. You see the perfect job posted and believe youâre a match. With great excitement, you reach out to someone inside the company only to get ignored or brushed off. Youâre doing the right thing so why isnât it working? Youâre too late to the party. That job has probably been circulating inside the company for weeks. The person you are contacting may even be in the running for the job. The best time to network is before a job is posted. In fact, networking after a job has been posted really isnât networking. It is chasing a job. Read Stop Chasing Jobs. Start identifying companies that you would like to work for and begin networking before jobs are posted. 6. Ill land an interview for every job I apply to. If youâve purposely submitted a vague or general resume with the hope the recruiter will call for more details, think again. Most of the time, you will not receive a call. Heres the reality: Recruiters, human resources or the hiring manager only call you if you are a good match for the job. If your application and resume donât show how you are a perfect match for the job, the recruiter has very little interest in speaking with you. Read: How To Get Past The Applicant Tracking System (ATS) 7. Companies contact my references before or during the interview process. Every company has a different policy regarding reference checking. In general, reference checking doesnt happen until the end of the process. It costs time and money to verify references and if there are multiple candidates applying and interviewing, this can be a costly investment. However, a quick Internet search can often reveal information so some recruiters may be checking you out online. Carefully select the people you want to serve as references and prepare them to provide the most relevant and important details about you. And Google yourself to make sure there isnt any negative digital dirt! 8. My resume is the most important job search tool. It is important to have a well-written resume. However, how many hours do you spend updating, modifying, tweaking and adapting it? Too many. The numerous hours you spend hiding behind a computer screen means you arenât spending time on the phone reaching out to people or attending one-on-one networking meetings. Invest your time wisely. How many people will actually take the time to thoroughly review your resume and ask you questions about each job you held? Much of the detail you obsess over is irrelevant to hiring professionals or will be overlooked in haste. Spend less time obsessing over your resume and more time meeting new people and learning about the needs, wants and desires of people in the industry you desire to work in! The Bottom Line: These job seeker #fails or missteps are mostly based on lack of knowledge. This means with a little education around the job search process, theyll be easy for you to fix!
